What is a SIP provider?

SIP, the abbreviation for Session Initiation Protocol, enables telephony over the internet. There are no noticeable differences for the user, but the data is transmitted via the internet connection and via a SIP provider.

How does SIP work?

The data is sent in packets via the internet. The possibilities differ from a normal telephone call, which is already evident in the hardware, the telephone. Telephone calls can be conducted in a very classic way by dialing the telephone number of the desired call partner. You can also enter the associated e-mail address if you want to set up a telephone call. To do this, the phone must allow letters and characters to be entered instead of numbers. Costs can already be saved when furnishing commercial buildings or business premises, since cabling must only be carried out for the internet and no longer with telephone cables. You can choose whether the data is to be transmitted via LAN or WLAN. In addition to telephone calls, voicemail and other messages can also be sent.

Number assignment of SIP providers

Classic telephone numbers have a clearly structured structure. After the country code, the area code of the region is dialed and then the phone number of the respective line. The situation is different with assignment by SIP providers, since transmission via the internet does not require a clear location. The guidelines have therefore been amended accordingly. The country codes are different from the previous ones, but can be assigned with some knowledge. The rules for classification will become stricter and clearer over the next few years, as this procedure is still being developed despite increasing popularity. Most SIP providers, as well as toplink, allow their customers to choose their own phone number. There are further differences between providers: Some offer short contract terms and easy management of products via the internet. Others charge setup fees and minimum sales volumes for certain services, such as for businesses instead of private customers.

Advantages for the consumer

Telephony may be practical, but can also become an expensive business when it comes to international telephone calls. With telephone calls via VoIP, however, the location is irrelevant, since only an internet connection must be available. Phone calls can be routed anywhere with an existing internet connection, both on the fixed network and on a mobile phone. The mobile phone requires either registration with a SIP provider or the corresponding app. The same applies to the laptop and the tablet. Costs can thus be reduced, which is quickly and clearly evident for companies with a large catchment area and diverse customer groups, and can also support virtual collaboration and global outsourcing.
